Environmental crisis – FIDAC

FIDAC

STARTING POINT

In 2002, the tanker Prestige was transporting some 77.000 tonnes of heavy oil when it sank, spilling out about 63.000 tonnes which contaminated the western coast of Galicia and that affected Spain’s northern coast and France’s southern-eastern shores, as well as part of the United Kingdom. On November 13th, 2012, A Coruña’s Audiencia Provincial started the process to determine the civil and penal responsibilities of the sinking

THE CHALLENGE

As was to be expected, the real challenge was the media attention that surrounded the whole process, with over 200 journalists closely following it. We took over the communications of Galicia’s most important judicial process as well as Spain’s greatest natural disaster. This macro-trial had an allocated budget of 1,3 million euros, 133 witnesses, 98 experts, 21 attorneys and 50 lawyers representing 2.128 affected parties, including the French State.
